THOR Malaysia’s Mangrove Mission

Earlier this summer, colleagues from THOR Malaysia spent the day planting 500 mangrove seedlings as part of a wetlands restoration initiative.

Working with Wetlands International and the Selangor State Forestry Department, 32 THOR colleagues took part in a hands-on conservation activity aimed at restoring coastal ecosystems and strengthening the resilience of Malaysia’s wetland areas.

Mangroves are a critical natural infrastructure in Malaysia, covering over 500,000 hectares. They protect coastlines from erosion and storm surges thanks to their dense and complex root network, as well as their ability to hold coastal mud and sand in place. They also store large amounts of ‘blue carbon’ and are an essential sanctuary and breeding ground for local fisheries and other marine wildlife.

The local THOR team took part in this Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative at the protected mangrove forest reserve, Hutan Simpan Banjar Utara in Selangor, around 80km north of the THOR Malaysia site.

Chee Heong Kiew, THOR Malaysia's Managing Director, said: "Our team had a hugely rewarding time assisting Wetlands International and the Selangor State Forestry Department with their ongoing conservation work. It was a challenging but rewarding day away from our regular duties, getting into nature, and giving back to our local environment for the betterment of our communities in Malaysia. My thanks to the team for the enthusiastic participation, and to the charities and local governing body allowing us to take part in meaningful action for Malaysia."
